Sentinels were created long before your mama. Installation 04 was ever even conceived. They operated automated facilities such as Gas Mines like the one found on Threshold for "untold centuries" before the facility was redesigned to research the Flood. Therefore it is possible that they were only outfitted for combat after the Flood infected your gay researching skills.
On the level "Why are you even reading this fagmuffin" you get rickrolled by the arbiter in elvisland.

Novels
In the Novel Ghosts of Onyx, the sentinels show a greater capacity for individual thought and learning than in the games. Sentinels first began asking questions of the Spartan III's and when they did not correctly answer, proceeded with aggressive hostilities. As the Sentinels were slowly destroyed one-by-one they proceeded to change tactics to take greater advantage of the situation. They are also significantly better equipped for combat than in the games. With shields capable of stopping up to a rocket and an energy beam which a single blast from is a threat to Spartan 9000000000000s, it is a serious threat. Additionally, these sentinels wield the ability to combine with others and exponentially increase their combat capabilities, able to take out entire ships with only a few bursts.
