Prototype is one of the seven short films comprising the anime adaptation of the Halo universe, Halo Legends [1][2].

The story follows a Marine sent to Algolis to destroy a prototype powered armor, but when he arrives, he finds the planet is still inhabited by Humans who are under siege by the Covenant Empire. The suit is their only hope for survival, forcing him to disobey orders and use the suit to help the civilian populace.

Summary

Two marines take shelter in a forest on an unknown planet, surrounded by their dead comrades. The female marine stares up at the planet's two moons and admires their beauty. She asks her sergeant about his codename, 'Ghost', while he dispassionately treats her wounds. With her dying words, she asks him, for once in his life, to 'be human'.

Three years later, the planet Algolis is under attack by the Covenant Empire. The marines defending UNSC Weapons Research Facility T12A are taking heavy casualties fighting Covenant air and ground forces, trying to buy time for the remaining civilians to evacuate. However, the Hades Corps of UNSC Engineers refuses to retreat until they've destroyed all navigational data and prototype weapons in compliance with the Cole Protocol. As a civilian passenger shuttle is shot down by Covenant plasma, several marines voice the opinion that they've been left to die by their commander, Ghost, who's gained an unsavory reputation in the Marine Corps for losing his entire platoon 3 years earlier.

The Covenant forces begin their final push, backed by Wraith tanks and Hunters. Suddenly, an armored figure bursts out of the Research facility. It's the Prototype Suit the marines were sent to destroy, piloted by Ghost himself. He orders the Hades Corps to retreat with the civilians while he distracts the Covenant. Over the objections of his commanding officer, Ghost engages the alien ground units and armor with grenades and autocannon fire. Covenant aerial units appear, and Ghost takes to the air with the suit's rocket boosters, taking out multiple Banshees and even a Phantom single-handedly. Once on the ground though, he is surrounded by Elites and Grunts with Fuel Rod Guns. His suit's shields and armor protect him for a time, until a plasma grenade hits his right arm, severing it and disabling the suit.

As Ghost lies dying inside the armor, looking up at the escaping shuttles, he flashes back to the dying female marine. He admits that, after she died; a part of him was lost as well. Since that night, he has viewed conscience and emotions as a weakness to be overcome. He truly became a 'ghost', a shadow surrounded by death. The countdown on the suit's HUD finishes, and the computer requests a voice command for the self destruct. Ghost turns to face the advancing Covenant, and shows his first real emotion; a wicked smile. He gives the voice command 'BE HUMAN' and the suit explodes in a massive nuclear detonation, destroying the facility and all the attacking Covenant.

As the evacuees rendezvous with a UNSC Frigate in orbit of Algolis, Ghost's CO reports that the Cole Protocol has been enforced, all navigational data and technology prototypes have been destroyed. He redacts his previous request for Ghost's Court Martial, listing him 'Missing in Action during heavy combat on Algolis', and praising him for his actions as both a marine and a human being. The survivors depart to rendezvous with the UNSC Heart of Midlothian.
