The Scholte-class missile corvette is a corvette employed by the Colonial Military Authority and later, the United Nations Space Command.[1]
Overview
Design details
Fitted with a good mix of cannon and missile batteries, backed by a comprehensive sensor system, the Scholte was classified—at the time of introduction into the CMA Navy's fleet—as a state-of-the-art frigate. As larger ships entered service both its classification and stature diminished, but it remained a vessel that could be counted upon to punch far above its tonnage class.[1]
Service history
A lynchpin of CMA fleets at the height of the Insurrection, the Scholte-class replaced older Osa-class and Akita vessels.[1]
Now known as one of the main ship classes that UNSC Navy recruits operate as part of their training deployments, the Scholte-class has an unenviable reputation as being reliable, heavily-armed, and rarely utilized in any fleet engagements until the final months of the Covenant War due to its slow boost speed and limited slipspace capabilities.[1]
Production notes
The Scholte-class' appearance originated as a part of design exploration exercise for UNSC ships, done as a collaboration between the narrative and concept teams at 343 Industries, during the development of Halo Infinite and the 2022 edition of the Halo Encyclopedia. This was the result of a fortiutous alignment of interests, which allowed them to leverage the ideas generated for multiple purposes; the narrative team wished to further flesh out the UNSC fleet, while the concept team needed to craft ship designs for Infinite, which would ultimately culminate in the Mulsanne-class light frigate seen in-game.[1][2]
Trivia
Scholte is a Dutch surname with an occupational root in "Schout," a local official appointed to carry out administration, enforcement, and prosecution duties.
