A city is a type of settlement that sapient species create. They were often large and complex.
The word "urban" is often used to describe city areas.[1]
Types
Human
Prior to the activation of the Halo Array, of humanity's greatest cities was Marontik.
Post-Halo human cities often have transit systems featuring Maglev trains.[2][3][4] Roads for Civilian vehicles were also a common feature of human cities.[5][6] Quite a few cities also prominently hosted Space elevators.[7][8][3] Cities often have their own emergency forces, such as the New Mombasa Police Department, Boston Emergency, or Elysium City Law Enforcement.
Post-Halo human cities are filled with buildings, structures, and other areas often created using metals,[5][9] concrete like materials,[10][11] and wood.[12] Some buildings have landing pads for various aerospace craft.[13][12] Some Post-Halo human cities are actually arcologies. Several examples of this include the Castra Arcology,[14] the Haven arcology.[15][16] and New Mombasa.[note 1]
Post-Halo human cities can be found near water bodies[7][13][3] or nearly totally land locked.[17][6]

Species of the Covenant
- Covenant - Designed as the Covenant's capital, High Charity featured its own city.[18] The Covenant were also known to use derelict Forerunner cities, like with the Ten Cities of Edification.[19]
- Sangheili - The Sangheili made and designed their own cities. In the case of Sunaion, it was a "temple city",[20] with tall buildings that have a minimal footprint.[21] In the instance of the Tower of Ghalod'n, the entire city was mostly a single tower.[22]
- Sanghelios is mostly composed of city-states, led and named after specific Sangheili families.[23][24]

- Kig-Yar - The Kig-Yar had developed at least one major city, Tilu City. It was old and primarily filled with merchants.[25]
Forerunner
Forerunners built their own cities. There were quite a few different types of cities.
The capital of the Ecumene was the city-station of Maethrillian.
Forerunners also built cities on planets, some of which survived the nearly 100,000 year gap from the firing of the Halo Array like the Ten Cities of Edification.[19] Other ground cities of the Forerunners were the ones built on Triniel.[26]
