Halopedia improvement project brief

Ok I am here to start submitting my Halopedia Improvement project. A project that is to help improve Halopedia in 3 Phases.

To be brief

  • Phase 1: This is the tidy up section. This prepares our wiki.
  • Phase 2: This is the Community section. This sets up our wiki for the community we will be welcoming.
  • Phase 3: I dont really need to submit this one as its more just keeping the previous phases up to scratch

Submission and request

I am finally submitting Phase 2 and 3 because Phase 1 is coming along nicely and it seems right to start moving on to submitting Phase 2.

I really need to things from you all right now.

  • 1. A vote to see if you all think these are ready to be put into the project.
  • 2. Comments on how we can improve these Phases.

Phase 2 Keeping us going

Step 5 Internal Community improvement

This step is getting the wiki community fun

  • 1. Selective reset for featured content and Did you know content.
    • 1.1. Discuss the existing content and see what ones we keep or remove.
    • 1.2. Features articles ready to restart
  • 2. Add community events on the wiki.
    • 2.1. (Example ideas) Monthly polls.
    • 2.2. (Example ideas) Weekly featured articles/pictures/videos for users to vote for.(rotate them monthly so the homepage is more dynamic)
    • 2.3. (Example ideas) Aprils fools day and other holiday celebrations.(we make a special Wiki skin for the holidays)
    • 2.4. (Example ideas) Start weekly discussions in the forums.
  • 3. Make more dynamic news. More detailed.
    • 3.1. Start up news and build it up.
    • 3.2. HAVE FUN.
    • 3.3. Community Update on the Homepage.
  • 4. Be welcoming to new members.

Step 6 External Community improvement

This step is to help build relations with other communities outside our internal wiki one.

  • 1. Tidy and add to the Halopedia Community Portal using CIA391's other Community hubs as a example.
  • 2. Use the Community portal to add community's to the Sidebar.
  • 3. Get Twitter and Facebook more updated and up to scratch.
    • 3.1. Get more admins on the Twitter and Facebook.
    • 3.2. Add a bot to the Twitter and possibly Facebook so some automated posts are done to make life easier on the admins.
    • 3.3. Add posts on Featured stuff from step 5 on Twitter and Facebook.
    • 3.4. Add Admin and Patroller made projects on Twitter and Facebook.

Phase 3 Keeping our work looking great

Once this project makes it to Phase 3 it will be discontinued and fused with the Article Improvement Drive project and other projects due to the similar nature of Phase 3 and that project itself. But is outlined so fusion will be easier in the long run.

Step 7 Get more Patrollers

This step is to help encourage members to become Patrollers. Long term thing not expected to be completed straight away.

  • 1. Look through active users and see if any are suitable to be Patrollers.
  • 2. If none are currently ready keep an eye out in the long run.

Step 8 Content

This step is generally what already happens, but is here so people have stuff to work on.

Step 9 Keeping an eye on stuff

This step is kinda just the stuff that needs to be kept an eye on so they dont go out of hand in the future.

  • 1. Keep an eye on the Special:SpecialPages to make sure they are kept in check and dont get out of control. If a special page get into a list in the 300's then we need to do a clean out of it.
  • 2. Keep the feedback forum open, and use it to improve the site as time goes on.
  • 3. Update Old file naming conventions on pages to the new ones as done in Step 4.(Will link page when its ready)
  • 4. Update Old source conventions on pages to the new ones as done in Step 4.(Will link page when its ready)
  • 5. Keep updating the Community stuff we set up in step 5.(Will probably make a project page dedicated to keeping that set up)
  • 6. Keep the twitter and Facebook active with content.
  • 7. Keep up with 8 in general like we do already.

Please put any comments or suggestions for this here. I need feedback on ways we can improve each step of this phase. -CIA391 (talk) 08:20, 15 September 2017 (EDT)

Featured content could use a cleaning to keep it up to our standards, but I don't necessarily agree with completely resetting it, especially when it comes to the featured articles. The DYK would definitely benefit from a near complete reset as it's mostly old and outdated info.--Spartacus TalkContribs 12:37, 16 September 2017 (EDT)

Agreed on featured articles; most of those are still up to our standards, so a check-up would do rather than a complete reset. However, I think the same applies to DYK - myself and some others have been updating it from time to time, so I think selective revisions and removal of outdated info would be preferable to totally wiping it out.--Jugus (talk) 12:56, 16 September 2017 (EDT)
Per above. There is a need for a review of past successful entries. We can also implement some form of "Featured for a fixed time" rule for future featured entries. In other words, featured Articles are only considered featured for a year or less and will be removed from circulation at the expiry thereof.
As for the other proposals, I'm okay except for getting more patrollers. Any reason why we need to encourage users to sign up as patrollers? Given the current size of active users, I think the current size of the patroller group is quite sufficient. Phase 3 goes without needing a vote. — subtank 13:52, 16 September 2017 (EDT)
Featured Content reset was more an umbrella for the following two areas 1.1 and 1.2(thought that was clear, reset as in selective reset, my bad regardless for the bad wording which I fixed now). Removing them all outright did seem a lil iffy in my original draft heh. And I totally forgot the Did you know stuff, good call I added that in.
And "more Patrollers" is more longer term for if everything works out nearly perfectly in the intentions of Phase 2. As I am hoping our userbase will grow a lot larger due to everything.(probably hoping a little too high here but one can hope right?) Probably a Phase 3 thing really in hindsight as that is the long term stuff. :) New Blood is always a good thing to have also if they are trusted enough. Regardless I moved it to Phase 3 due to that realization. But if you still have a counter to it being a long term thing I will be ok removing it. It was always a area that struggled to find a place in one of the other areas. -CIA391 (talk) 17:11, 16 September 2017 (EDT)
For Phase 3, I meant we need not have to vote on it because it's obvious Phase 3 will happen regardless. — subtank 22:02, 16 September 2017 (EDT)
