Why is this a group of Marines?

This marking on the Halo 3 Pelican seems to be exactly the same as the marking seen on the Warthog and Mongoose in that the follow the same form X/XXX-X. In the case of the Warthog, M/AAV-20 stands for Marines/All-purpose Armored Vehicle. Similarly, the Halo 3 Mongoose sports M/LAT-16 which is Marines/Light Armored Transport. Logically, S/VRC-8 would be some initialism that would designate the Pelican as an aircraft. It would also imply the Halo 3 variant is the 8th such version of the vehicle. I haven't found as yet what each letter means but I am working on it. I'm not sure where the Marines interpretation came from in this article considering how the other Halo 3 vehicles mentioned have their letters spelled out and known.

Incidentally, it's a known internal error with 343i that the Reach Mongoose was erroneously tagged with the M/AAV-20 tag meant for the Warthog. (It had to do with the master texture file that contained several logos and decals.) I tried to get the pictures in the first Visual Guide to not show it but it didn't work. It did influence it not being applied to the Halo 4 version. The designation of the Halo 4 Mongoose is inferred in the Halo 4 Visual Guide's text as M/LAT-17 by me (there now being 17 versions of the Mongoose by that time). -ScaleMaster117 (talk) 08:02, 6 July 2014 (EDT)

Thank you for clarifying. I'll make the necessary changes to the articles in question momentarily. I'm not sure what S/VRC-8 could mean, though the V almost certainly stands for VTOL. "Space/VTOL R Craft - 8", perhaps? I can't think of any R words that work convincingly; "Reconnaissance" seems out of place and "Rotor" is totally wrong. --Our vengeance is at hand. I'm trying to find who in Bungie may have come up with the designation in the first place for these. At least the Warthog's and Mongoose's initials were evident from the stickers on the vehicles.
