"I submit that we've done all we could reasonably be expected to do, that the longer we delay the harsher the Covenant will be. It makes sense to surrender now."
— Ensign Ellen Dowski

Ensign Ellen Dowski was a junior officer in the UNSC Navy. She was assigned to the bridge crew of the UNSC Pillar of Autumn in 2552.[1]

Biography

On August 30th, she sent a picture of an R7 thrust coupling to Lt. Gail Purdy, inquiring as to what they were and what their purpose was.[2]

After the Autumn's command crew crash landed on Installation 04 on Kilo Tango Victor 17, she continually pestered Captain Keyes and the rest of the bridge crew by suggesting they give up, surrender to the Covenant and be taken as prisoners. At this, Crewman Singh threatened to kill her, while Captain Keyes was worried that her talk would stir up similar thoughts in Corporal Wilkins and his Marine fire team. After much of her bickering, Keyes finally submitted and, taking Dowski's words "seriously", he had her tied up so that she could surrender and be taken prisoner once the Covenant found her.[3]

Later, she was captured by a squad of Sangheili and Unggoy, and while giving her captors information, she betrayed her comrades by identifying her CO, so that she could prove she was right and be taken prisoner along with the others. The Sangheili proceeded to systematically execute everyone in the group, except Captain Keyes. Dowski became shocked at this and was about to protest when the Sangheili shot her in the forehead with an M6D.[4]

Trivia

  • Ellen Dowski is in some ways similar to Peter Bonifacio, who also collaborated with the Covenant, only to be killed when his usefulness was over.
  • It is unknown why the Elite that killed Dowski chose to use an M6D, since most Elites would rather fight empty handed than use human weapons. In this case, the Elite in question may have simply been "curious" as to how the M6D worked. Alternatively, it may have been regarded as a "just reward" to be killed with a human weapon for having betrayed her human comrades.
