Template:Ratings Template:New Content Project GUNGNIR was a top-secret UNSC program under the supervision of Section THREE of the Office of Naval Intelligence.[1] Section THREE's then head Rear Admiral Michael Stanforth had some degree of involvement with the project. The program resulted in the creation of the Weapon/Anti-Vehicle Model 6 Grindell/Galilean Nonlinear Rifle, more commonly known as the Spartan Laser, alongisde many supplementary armor systems, including the GUNGNIR knee guards, helmet and pauldrons for the MJOLNIR Powered Assault Armor.[2] Some of these armor components, including the shoulders and knee guards, are also utilized by the UNSC Army and the UNSC Marine Corps.[3]
Armor Characteristics
Helmet Characteristics
The GUNGNIR helmet is boxy and comes with more facial protection than any other helmet, as it replaces the usage of a visor with a small camera on the right that displays the outside to the user with thick armor plating. Additions to the helmet include a hardened uplink/remote sensor package placed on the left side of the helmet favoured among snipers and CBRN attachments, including an HU/RS placed on the right side and rebreathers similar to those used in MJOLNIR EOD armor.[3]
Shoulder Characteristics
The Supplemental Armor, Pauldron, MJOLNIR Mk. V [G] is curved and covers most of the shoulder and upper arm. It bears something of a resemblance to the shoulder of the Commando armour, but with sections removed.
Knee Guard Characteristics
- Price: 25,000 cR[3]
The GUNGNIR knee guards primarily protect the knee cap and also covers some parts surrounding it.
Trivia
- In Norse mythology, Gungnir ("swaying one") is Odin's magical spear, which is an infallibly accurate weapon. The symbol for Gungnir is located on the side of the Spartan Laser.[4][5] The weapon's abbreviation, W/A M6 G/GNR, bears a notable resemblance to the name "Gungnir." Like the Spartan Laser, the Gungnir of mythology is an extremely accurate weapon.
- The GUNGNIR helmet has only one video camera "eye" on one side of the face; in Norse mythology, the god Odin also had one eye.
- The GUNGNIR symbol can be seen on the side of the Forklift in Halo: Reach.
