Kateukal

Kateukal were an animal species native to Doisac, the Jiralhanae homeworld.

In Jiralhanae prehistory, prior to the Great Immolation, female Jiralhanae were tasked with raising and training kateukal warbeasts. To accomplish this, the Jiralhanae killed the kateukal mothers, then raised the kateukal pups. The pups were allowed to sleep in their beds, to nurse at their breasts, and to fight with the Jiralhanae's own offspring. The presence of the pups and their incessant yapping would discourage male Jiralhanae from staying at their home settlements. According to Gorian, the pups then matured into warbeasts and became legends. During the Battle for Zeta Halo, Gorian compared Spartan Tomas Horvath to kateukal pups, which Gorian said were small and stupid.
