Campaign and Firefight

In campaign levels, the character you play as is dictated in the game's scenario (.scen) file, in the "Campaign Players" section[4]. This feature is only made proper use of for the first player, whenever you are jumping between levels, the co-op players remain the same throughout. In each level, the first player is dictated as either odst01[3] (The Rookie), or the character you are meant to play as in that level (sergeant/Buck, dutch, mickey, romeo)[3]

Jonathan Doherty (odst01-04) M7S SMG M6C/SOCOM

This is the default playable character in ODST, and as such, is used as the character for when you are playing in Co-operative play. Interestingly enough, each co-op player character has their own slot, but they are all duplicates of The Rookie. They are labelled odst01-04[3], representing each player.
