- "We lost Checkman in the atmosphere."
- — Dutch[2]
Checkman was an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper in the UNSC Marine Corps. In 2544,[1] he took part in Operation: GREY VEIL - a mission to assassinate a Covenant logistics officer on Heian. Checkman was the first trooper killed in the mission, with his drop pod burning up on entry into Heian's atmosphere.[2]
Biography[edit]
In 2544,[1] Checkman was a part of a team of ODSTs in the 105th Shock Troops Division led by Master Sergeant Cortez, and containing troopers Taylor "Dutch" Miles and O'Brien and serving aboard the Diligence-class destroyer UNSC Kronstadt. That year, Kronstadt was tasked with deploying the team to Heian, in the Arc star cluster, to hunt down and eliminate a San'Shyuum prophet in charge of the region's supply routes. The team's M8900 drop pods were deployed in the midst of an a meteor shower to mask their approach, but Checkman's accidentally collided with one of the meteors - resulting in the pod entering the atmosphere sideways and burning up. As such, Checkman was killed before any of the team even made landfall on Heian.[2]
Production note[edit]
As elaborated by Frank O'Connor, Checkman's name is rather literal; check-man. Had he survived the drop on Heian, he would have served to watch the team's back - which would have prevented the ambush by the Brute Chieftain that ultimately resulted in Cal-141's death.[3]
In The Babysitter, Checkman was voiced by Mark Adley.[4]
