The Sol system, also referred to as the Sol star system, is the home star system of the human species.[3] Earth, the human homeworld, holds the seat of power for both the Unified Earth Government,[4] and the United Nations Space Command.[5]
Citizens of the system are referred to as "Solarian".[6]

History
Ancient history

Rise of humanity
Humanity had put together joint efforts to colonize the rest of the Sol system by 2080.[10][11]
The 22nd-century saw the rise of the Koslovics and Friedens across the solar system.[12] The Jovian Moons Campaign, Mars Campaign, and finally the Interplanetary War would all come out of it.
Just prior to[6] the January 1, 2362 launch of the Odyssey,[13][14] Ixion would become the last chartered solar colony.[6] With the Odyssey's launch, the first wave of human expansion outside the system would take place.[15]
Human-Covenant war
- Main article: Human-Covenant war
The first known incursion into the Sol System was on October 10, 2552 by unknown enemies.[16]
On October 20, the Fleet of Sacred Consecration was detected near the moon of Io. Soon after, the Fleet appeared near Earth, commencing the Battle for Earth.[17] Over the next few months, battles on Earth and elsewhere in the system would take place.[16] The Battle of Mare Erythraeum on Mars would take place during this time frame.[18] The UNSC Home Fleet would be utterly devastated by November 17 with the arrival of the Anodyne Spirit and Truth's fleet.[19] One of final skirmishes on Earth would take place on December 3, during Operation: MARSH FLASH.[16]
Despite massive Covenant assault across the Sol system even on Sol colonies' cities,[20] many of the human population centers of Sol colonies, such as Mars, and Luna in the system survived the assault relatively intact,[21] although the majority of Earth habitats have been destroyed.[22] In aftermath of the Battle for Tribute with the loss of over half of the population on Tribute, Earth was unable to afford to spare any immediate assistance with Sol’s colonies that has been left in ruins during the Covenant onslaught on the Sol system.[23]
Post-war
- Main article: Created uprising
Following the war in 2555, Mars played host to a joint-operations training exercise, Operation: FOCUS LENS 2555 - tasked with simulating a second Covenant invasion of the Sol system.[24]
Following The Reclamation in October 2558, Sol territories fell under the control of the Created, broadcasting their signals.[25]
Trivia
- Sol is the original Latin and the actual scientific name for Earth's sun. This designation and name has actually been used instead of "Solar System" in many science fiction novels.
- Sol is also an emblem option in Halo 3 and Halo: Reach.
