Wind turbine

A wind turbine is a machine that converts the wind's kinetic energy into rotary mechanical energy, which is then used to do work. In twentieth first century's advanced models, the rotational energy is converted into electricity, the most versatile form of energy, by using a generator. Wind turbines with three blades spin more smoothly and are easier to balance than those with two blades. Also, while larger wind turbines produce more energy, the smaller models are less likely to undergo major mechanical failure, and thus are more economical to maintain. Many different models of wind turbines exist, the most striking being the vertical-axis Darrieus, which is shaped like an egg beater.
Wind Power Station 7 on Zanzibar Island houses a massive horizontal wind wheel. It is one of several power stations built by the East African Protectorate in the late 25th century in an attempt at re-nationalization.[1][2]
Many of the remote agricultural homesteads on Reach utilized both horizontal and vertical-axis wind turbines for power generation.[3] A number of vertical-axis wind turbines were also located in the campus of Corbulo Academy of Military Science on Circinius IV.[4] An Insurrectionist stronghold on Talitsa used at least one vertical axis wind turbine.[5] The Outer Colony of Losing Hand relied largely on wind power, before their wind farm was destroyed by the crash of the UNSC Dark Was the Night in 2552.[6]
