Breach of Canon
It should be noted that the trailer for Halo: Reach violates many instances of game and novel canon.
- The comms traffic indicates that the enemy (presumably the Covenant) made slipspace jumps below the orbital defense grid, into the planet's atmosphere. According to Halo: The Fall of Reach, the Covenant made planetfall via the suicidal tactic of landing massive numbers of dropships at the poles of Reach.
- Reach was the site of the largest naval engagement prior to that of the multiple fleet engagements around Earth. The trailer shows only a few ships and only one destroyed UNSC frigate-level ship.
- Comms traffic also mentions the declaration of a "Winter Contingency", a plan of action never once discussed in the Fall of Reach.
- Reach was the only planet to be glassed by the Covenant while humans were still on it. However, the glassing of Reach was carried out via orbital bombardment from the Covenant fleet, and was incomplete. The massive blue explosions that can be seen in the trailer have the characteristic blue coloring of Covenant weaponry, but are not the product of orbital bombardment.
These reason have been cited by some as proof that the planet depicted within the trailer is not reach, but some other planet that was attacked and destroyed by the covenant earlier in the war, and that the latter levels of the game will take place on Reach itself.
