“ | Memories of loss and dreams of vengeance, sealed in steel and composites. Mythic Shotgun with increased damage, accuracy, and rate of fire. The user's movement speed is also increased while Oathsworn is equipped.[5] | ” |
Oathsworn is the name bestowed upon numerous custom-crafted shotguns used by SPARTAN-II Kelly-087. While all Oathsworns have differed in their technical specifics, the most recent iteration used by Kelly between October 2558 and October 2559 is an altered version of the ubiquitous M45D Tactical Shotgun.[6][7][8]
Overview
Design details
During the early stages of the SPARTAN program and the Human-Covenant War, weapon customisation was highly discouraged, with Spartans expected to go through official Naval Special Warfare Command channels to requisition equipment - only customising to the degree necessary for operations. However, as the war dragged on, customisations began to creep into Spartan armouries in the form of charms and painted icons to honour fallen comrades and colonies. This manifested in a number of unique weapons including Nornfang, an SRS99-S5 AM sniper rifle altered by Linda-058 and Etilka, an altered M247H machine gun used by Jorge-052. Oathsworn is no exception to this rule, and over the years a number of shotguns have existed under the name, all created and used by Kelly-087 due to her preference for close-quarters fighting. Each Oathsworn has been created by Kelly for a new mission following the previous one being lost or discarded on the battlefield. All of the Oathsworn shotguns have had varying technical specifications, but all have retained the name and iconography emblazoned on the weapon;[6] a Rabbit painted as a nod to Kelly's nickname assigned during the SPARTAN-II training due to her speed. The upper receiver is marked with the words "REMEMBER REACH", a nod to the catastrophic defeat suffered by humanity during the final months of the Human-Covenant War.[9]
The words Kelly whispers as she rebuilds and tunes each shotgun change every time, but the intent behind them remains the same.[6] The current iteration of the weapon is an M45D Tactical Shotgun.
Service history
Oathsworn, then-an M45D shotgun, was used by Kelly-087 during War Games training following her escape from Onyx in early 2553.[11] Her preference for M45Ds continued throughout the postwar period, lasting up until the commencement of Operation: BIRD IN HAND in October 2558. Kelly used the M45D-based Oathsworn in the mission to board Argent Moon,[10] and subsequently carried it throughout Blue Team's missions to Meridian and Genesis.[9] Kelly kept this weapon (or one externally identical) in service throughout the ensuing Created uprising, using Oathsworn during her return to Reach in October 2559.[12]
SPARTAN-IV personnel may request a recreation of Oathsworn for use in War Games simulations.[5]
In-game information
Halo 5: Guardians
Oathsworn is a Mythic weapon in Halo 5: Guardians available as an Ultra Rare Level energy REQ that grants 150 REQ Points when sold. As a slightly upgraded version of the Lawgiver, Oathsworn has increased damage, accuracy, and rate of fire compared to the normal shotgun, features slightly more range and accuracy over the Lawgiver, and increases the user's movement speed while the weapon is equipped. As the weapon has a built-in Speed Boost, users of Oathsworn receive white auras and highlights, making them more easily visible on the battlefield.[6]
In the campaign, Oathsworn can be equipped only if Kelly is selected by a player in cooperative play. Because of this, Oathsworn is the only special weapon in the game that cannot be used by the player in the solo campaign. The campaign rendition of Oathsworn has the Speed Boost removed and is exactly identical performance-wise to a standard Shotgun, including the strong vertical recoil. This is due to Kelly already being given the Speed Booster and Reflex Enhancer armor mods as a passive bonus, meaning that Oathsworn's Speed Boost effect would be redundant.
