Order of battle for Viery, Reach

"And we are now under attack across the Viery territory, including Orbital Defenses. As per the Winter Contingency, we are countering on every front."
Auntie Dot

During the Fall of Reach, the order of battle for operations in the Viery Territory on Reach was comprised of many different units from the UNSC Army and Marine Corps, with air support provided by warships and starfighters of the Navy. [1] Over the course of the battle, three Army brigades and numerous Marine rifle and shock infantry battalions would defend and go on the offensive against the Covenant Army in Viery. Elements of this joint force participated in the Battle at Szurdok Ridge, where they attempted to prevent the Covenant from gaining a foothold on Reach.[1]

Trivia

  • It is theorised a total of at least 6,700 soldiers[note 2] and roughly 6,400 to 9,600 Marines and sailors[note 3] participated in operations in the Viery Territory on Reach.
  • The name of the 1337th Battalion is almost certainly a reference to "leet", the eponymous word of leet speek.

Notes

  1. ^ It's currently unknown if the 12th Marine Regiment that fought during the Battle of Viery is a Field Artillery unit like its predecessor that served in China and during the Second World War, the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War, and during the War in Afghanistan. Although, as it contains four battalions (1/12, 3/12, 4/12, and 5/12) unlike it's 21st century equivalent (1/12 and 3/12), it could be suggested that the 12th Marines in 2552 have transitioned to an infantry regiment.
  2. ^ Judging by the numbers of regiments in the three brigades, it is likely that the UNSC Army uses an organization similar to British and Commonwealth regiments. Based on that particular unit hierarchy, these formations have at least a minimum of 500 soldiers serving within each of these regiments. It could also be theorized that the Army has used the Brigade Combat Team organization first used in the early 21st century by the United States Army judging by the number of regiments/battalions and companies within each of the Brigades.
  3. ^ Based on modern U.S. Marine Corps organization, at least 800 to 1,200 Marines and sailors serve within a single battalion.
