Infinity

Infinity is the fourth campaign level of Halo 4. Completing the level on any difficulty grants the player the Infinity achievement, while completing the level with no preventable Marine deaths on Heroic difficulty or harder unlocks the Bros to the Close achievement.

Summary

John-117 arrives at Infinity's crash site to find UNSC forces overwhelmed by the Prometheans. After searching and following a few squads of Marines, John eventually meets Thomas Lasky and Commander Palmer. Captain Andrew Del Rio orders ground teams to return to Infinity to repel the attackers, but Lasky cannot clear an landing zone. He requests John-117 to clear an landing zone for the UNSC forces in the swamp. John-117 finds an area occupied by the Covenant remnant, who has joined the Promethean forces, and clears it for a landing zone.

John-117 is then taken by a Pelican to Infinity's crash site, where he, along with several Spartan-IVs, clear a path to Infinity's hangar bay. Once he entered the ship, John-117 pilots a Mantis and heads through the service corridor to the top side of Infinity, where the Covenant remnant has set up three jammers to prevent the ship from firing her weapons at the Didact and the Covenant remnant's battlecruisers. John destroys the jammers, and holds out until he can re-activate the Infinity's MAC cannon. With Infinity's weapons all firing at his Cryptum, the Didact retreats after two Covenant battlecruisers are destroyed.

Transcript

{Cutscene}

Fade in to a forest on Requiem as John-117 walks toward Infinity.

• Cortana: "Stay low; recon sortie heading this way."

John waits beneath a tree and looks up at several Phantoms and Banshees flying over his position. They head towards the Infinity while the Didact, in his Cryptum, hovers near the ship, scanning it. There are explosions on the side of the Infinity

• Cortana: "The ship looks intact."

• John-117: "Something tells me that's only because the Didact wanted it that way."

• Thomas Lasky (COM): "This is Lasky to UNSC Infinity. We're up to our necks in bad guys down here. Does anyone read?"

• John-117: "This is Sierra 117 of the Template:UNSCship. We're on station, ready to assist."

• Thomas Lasky (COM): (breaking up) "Negative copy, sounded like you said "Forward Unto Dawn? Come again-"

The transmission breaks up, leaving static in the comm.

• Cortana: "Signal's bouncing in and out; I can't clean it up."

• John-117: "Light up their friend-or-foe tags; we're gonna need something to zero in on."

John looks on as the Cryptum continues to scan the ship. Fades to black.

Infinity

{Gameplay}

Covenant air forces fly towards the Infinity.

Another recon sortie passes overhead while the Didact continues to scan the ship.

• Cortana: "I'm seeing numerous IFF tags below the tree line. Painting the closest one on your HUD."

If the player approaches the cliff:

• John-117: "That scan's the same one we saw on the Dawn."

• Cortana: "Except now, the Didact's free to handle it personally."

John turns around and heads deeper into the jungle.

• Andrew Del Rio (COM): "Infinity to Commander Lasky. We've lost contact with your Pelicans! Report in!"

• John-117: "They must not have received his distress call."

John continues on and reaches an opening between the trees, which leads to a small clearing in the jungle. Two Promethean Knights teleport away from the area, leaving three Marine corpses.

• John-117: "Lasky?"

• Cortana: "One of them's an officer. Check his IFF tag."

John accesses one of the corpses' IFF tag.

• Cortana: "The tag IDs him as Jiminez, Paolo J."

• John-117: "Then Lasky's still out there somewhere."

A conversation can be heard from a nearby UNSC radio:

• Marine #1: "I mean, c'mon, Sarge. Who sends a recon downrange in the middle of a firefight?"

• Marine #2: "What was that?"

• Marine #1: "Tangos on our six!"

• Marine #2: "Now they're be— AAAA!"

John pushes on, fighting Prometheans. He reaches the top of a small hill, where a Promethean Knight is holding up a Marine. The Marine detonates a frag grenade, killing the Knight and himself in the process. The Knight disintegrates, but leaves something on the floor.

• Cortana: "Hold up, what was that he dropped on the ground over there?"

John picks up a Promethean vision module. He activates it. The environment is now lit in blue, but the Prometheans patrolling under the small hill are highlighted in red.

• Cortana: "This is what they've been using to see through the fog."

John pushes on, eliminating Prometheans he encounters.

• Cortana: "We've got another IFF on the far side of this thicket."

John approaches another corpse and accesses its IFF tag.

• Thomas Lasky (recorded): "We should get eyes out there looking for the others."

• Sarah Palmer (recorded): "Peters, you heard Commander Lasky."

• CPO Peters (recorded): "CFB, ma'am, Bulldogs! On me! We're going for a walk."

• Cortana: "Lasky's been through here, recently by the timestamp."

John continues on deeper into the jungle.

• Cortana: "I've got another IFF tag, but as far as I can tell we're moving into a choke point. This may end up as a dead end."

John arrives at the entrance to a Forerunner structure. There is a stack of of UNSC crates and weapons. An IFF tag lies on the floor, but no corpse can be seen.

• Cortana: "That's the friend-or-foe tag, but where's whoever it belongs to?"

John accesses the IFF tag record.

• Marine #3 (recorded): "XO! Got it!"

• Sarah Palmer (recorded): "Move! Move! Move!"

• Marine #4 (recorded): "Light's green!"

• Marine #3 (recorded): "C'mon, crank it!"

• Thomas Lasky (recorded): "Palmer, get your folks inside!"

• Sarah Palmer (recorded): "Yessir. Fours! Go!"

Several Navigation points appear behind the door.

• Cortana: "Multiple IDs! Chief, they're friendlies!"

{Cutscene} Four Spartan-IVs exit as soon as the door opens. They secure the area behind John. John looks at them. Thomas Lasky approaches John.

• Thomas Lasky: "Im afraid I will have to give you an IOU on the welcome home party." (shakes hand with John) "Tom Lasky. First officer of Infinity. Never thought I'd see you again."

Cuts to Sarah Palmer, who is securing the area.

• Sarah Palmer: "Seal 'er up!"

Palmer turns around and approaches John. She smiles.

• Sarah Palmer: "Thought you'd be taller."

John looks at her.

John and Palmer looks over while Lasky communicates with Captain Del Rio.

Reunited

{Gameplay}

John, accompanied by two Marines, leave the structure.

• Cortana: "A topographical scan of the area shows a break in the foliage North of here. Should be big enough to bring in a dropship for evac."

After engaging a small group of Prometheans, they move on. A conversation can be heard from a nearby UNSC radio.

• Marine #5: "Fall back! Infinity's being overrun!"

• Marine #6: "Ship's big as a city! How the hell can it be overrun?"

John pushes on, and encounters a group of Marines who are taking cover behind two rows of sandbags while firing at Prometheans.

• Thomas Lasky (COM): "Chief, it's Lasky. We're getting reports of friendlies pinned down near your position. Can you assist?"

John joins the Marines.

• Cortana: "Commander, this is Cortana. We're on our way."

• Marine #7: "I thought he was dead."

• Marine #8: "Holy mother of-"

• Marine #9: "Who's that?"

• Marine #10: "What. The. What?"

They push uphill. Two Promethean Watchers generate two Forerunner beam turrets while Knights and Crawlers attack the assaulting UNSC forces.

• Cortana: "Find some cover! Turrets!"

They clear the area. There's a locked door.

• Cortana: "The marines got trapped trying to get through these doors! Look for an interface!"

John uploads Cortana into a nearby pedestal.

• Cortana (COM): "These doors open into a cave system with a space large enough for an LZ. Hold them off long enough for me to open the doors!"

The UNSC forces defend the hill top. Marines man the machine gun turrets on the top of the hill and fire at the assaulting Prometheans.

• John-117: "Cortana? How close are we?"

• Cortana (COM): "You do your job and I'll do mine, Okay?!"

The majority of the Prometheans are eliminated.

• Cortana (COM): "Go it! Passageway's unlocked. Come and get me!"

John retrieves Cortana and enters the cave.

• Cortana: "I'm sorry about back there. That hatch's security was more difficult than I expected."

• John-117: "It's all right."

• Cortana: "It's not all right. Nothing about it is all right."

The arrive at the tunnel's exit, which leads to an open area. A Promethean Knight stands guard at the exit. Unggoy are walking around him.

The Prometheans and Covenant remnant are now allies.

• Cortana: "Knight! Wait… what's he doing?"

The Knight points at various directions.

• John-117: "Covenant?"

• Cortana: "They're working with the Prometheans?"

John attacks the Prometheans and Covenant remnant troops.

• Cortana: "I'm shocked how quickly the Didact has unified these Covenant!"

Phantoms arrive to drop off my Covenant while more Knights teleport into the area.

• Cortana: "Knights!"

John eventually clears the area.

• Cortana: "Cortana to Lasky. LZ's secured."

• Thomas Lasky (COM): "Roger that, Cortana. I'll give you the-"

• Andrew Del Rio (COM): "'Mayday! Mayday! Code Red! Hostile elements attempting to gain entrance to the Infinity bridge!"

• Officer #1 (COM): "They're outside the hatch!"

• Officer #2 (COM): "Door's breached! Door's breached!"

• Andrew Del Rio (COM): "'All units are to return to Infinity immediately. That's an order!"

A Pelican arrives and open its back hatch.

• Thomas Lasky (COM): "Chief, I'm redirecting the Spartan-IVs to Rally Point Alpha Sierra Foxtrot! Until we catch up, you have tactical command of the forward assault force. Rendezvous with those men and take back that ship!"

• John-117: "Yes sir."

• Thomas Lasky (COM): "Good luck, Chief. Lasky out."

John enters the Pelican. Fades to black.

• Pelican Pilot: "This is Pelican Five Nine Five. We have the Chief onboard and are outbound for Rally Point Alpha Sierra Foxtrot."

The Gun Show

Fades in to an area with numerous wreckages. Spartan-IVs are firing Covenant troops while the Pelican flies away.

• Cortana: "Weapons free, Chief! Let them have it!"

John enters a parked Scorpion.

• Cortana: "We're good to go, Chief. Let's show these Spartans how it's done."

• Spartan-IV: "Ground teams, be advised. The Master Chief is on the field. Advancing."

John leads the assault team on a Scorpion.

A Warthog was dropped in by a Pelican. Two S-IVs operate the Warthog. The assault force pushes through various Covenant fortifications.

• Thomas Lasky (Video COM): "117, Lasky. We are touching down just North of your position. Proceed to starboard hanger C-19, and we'll link up with you there."

After destroying a route occupied by the Covenant, they arrive at a route leading down to a mooring platform. Two S-IVs are defending it against a large Covenant force. John assists.

• Cortana: "Commander, the hangar bay doors are sealed tight."

• Thomas Lasky (COM): "Roger, Cortana. We'll find a way inside and free up one of the mooring platforms. Lasky out."

John enters the mooring platform, which activates and takes John up to hangar C-19, where more S-IVs are defending against Covenant remnant, including a pair of Mgalekgolo.

• Thomas Lasky (COM): "Secure the bay, and I'll release the lockdown on the ship."

• System: "Alert. Hull breach on Deck 13 Sector 5, Deck 25 Sector 12, Deck 131 Sector 7, Deck 270, Deck 895."

They clear the hangar of Covenant troops.

• Andrew Del Rio (Video COM): "'Master Chief, this is Captain Del Rio. Lasky just radioed. You picked a helluva time to rejoin us."

• John-117: "Sir, what's our status?"

• Andrew Del Rio (Video COM): "'That satellite took down the ship's defenses and is extracting data from the ship's mainframe as we speak."

• John-117: "Can we break the connection?"

• Andrew Del Rio (Video COM): "'Main point of contact is on the ship's upper hull. The fastest route is through the maintenance causeway. There's a Mantis docked inside the door. Take it. You'll need the extra firepower."

John enters a chamber. He activates a control panel.

Shining Armor

• System: "Warning: Operation of the Mantis Armored Defense System is prohibited without proper approval."

The floor in the center of the room opens, and a Mantis emerges from under the floor. John enters the Mantis.

• Cortana: "The hatch to the maintenance causeway is jammed. Let's do something about it."

John, using the Mantis' armaments, destroys the hatch. He engages the Covenant and Prometheans occupying the maintenance causeway.

• System: "Condition red. All personnel to emergency stations. Condition red. All personnel to emergency stations."

If the player stalls:

• Cortana: "Chief, we can't let the Didact get access to Infinity's data stores. Let's get top side."

John pushes on. Promethean Knights teleport to stop John, but are easily eliminated by the Mantis' weapons.

• System: "Warning - UNSC Infinity has descended below minimum safe attitude. Internal atmospheric pressure unstable."

John reaches the door to an elevator.

• System: "Attention - mass deployment base vessels. Emergency mooring procedure initiated. Bay doors will not respond to traffic control requests. Response crews are en route. Please avoid Mob F-959 until further notice."

John enters the elevator, which starts up.

• Thomas Lasky (COM): "Chief, it's Lasky. Come in."

• John-117: "Go, Commander."

• Thomas Lasky (COM): "We've identified several Covenant jamming devices on the outer hull."

• Cortana: "That might be how they're blocking the Infinity's defenses."

• Thomas Lasky (COM): "Exactly what we were thinking. Neutralize them so we can get our guns back online and show that satellite we are more than just a big paperweight."

The elevator stops.

• Cortana: "We're on it, Commander. Cortana out."

Eviction Proceedings

John leaves the interior of Infinity and arrives at the upper hull, which is also occupied by the Covenant. Didact's Cryptum, hovering directly in front of the hull, is scanning the ship. Numerous Covenant CRS-class light cruisers are holding their positions near and over the ship. Phantoms, Banshees, and Pelicans are having fierce battles in the sky. There are numerous defenses systems attached to the Infinity, but they are all offline. There are three jammers on the far side.

• Cortana: "I see the jammers. Three of them. Shoot them down."

John destroys one of the jammers. An anti-air gun behind the jammer activates and begins to fire at approaching Phantoms.

• Cortana: "First jammer disabled."

John destroys the second jammer. Another anti-gun activates and fire at the Covenant.

• Cortana: "That's two."

John destroys the last jammer. The last anti-gun activates.

• Cortana: "That's it. Jammers neutralized."

More Covenant troops are dropped off by Phantoms, while the missile launchers on Infinity are reactivated. The Cryptum moves closer towards the ship, and begins to scan the ship at a faster rate.

• Andrew Del Rio (COM): "'Del Rio to Master Chief. The rate that thing is searching our systems just doubled. I think it knows what you're up to."

John, on a Mantis, defends Infinity's anti-air defenses.

• Cortana: "Didact's not letting go without a fight."

More Phantoms land and deploy troops to attack John.

• Cortana: "Hold them off."

Banshees and Phantoms push on to attack the ship, but most of them are destroyed by John or the anti-air defenses.

• Cortana: "Just a few more minutes!"

Infinity's defenses fire at two of the Covenant light cruisers. The cruisers fall slowly.

If there are still Covenant troops on the hull:

• Cortana: "I'm still seeing targets. Finish them off."

John clears the hull of Covenant and Phantoms stop entering the area.

• Cortana: "That's how it's done."

• Andrew Del Rio (COM): "'Captain Del Rio to Sierra 117. The MAC networks reading's are operational, but our EM relays are malfunctioning. You'll have to initiate the link manually."

John approaches the MAC gun's control panel and activates it.

• Cortana: "That's it! MAC controls restored!"

The center MAC gun on the hull's platform reactivates and takes aim.

• Andrew Del Rio (COM): "'Forward MAC batteries, get that damn orb away from my ship. All cannons. Fire at will!"

All of Infinity's defenses fire at Didact's Cryptum, while a formation of F-41 Broadswords fly forward to attack the Cryptum. After taking a shot form the MAC gun, the Cryptum turns and flies away.

• Cortana: "It's working! The Didact's retreating!"

• Andrew Del Rio (COM): "'Del Rio to Infinity All Hands. We are Condition Yellow. Stand down. Section heads report in, begin damage assessment."

Fades to black.

{Cutscene}

The Infinity, damaged but intact, manages to take off. Cuts to the bridge where Del Rio, John, Palmer and Lasky have gathered with Cortana at the holotank.

• Andrew Del Rio: "What I want to know people, is where the hell did those things come from?!"

A hologram of a Knight is on the table.

• Cortana: "It's possible that they're native to Requiem. Or whatever counts as native for a Forerunner AI."

• Andrew Del Rio: "We've never seen this type of offense from any of the other installations."

• John: "Other installations?"

• Andrew Del Rio: "(annoyed) Mr. Lasky..."

Lasky brings up a hologram of a Halo Ring and then a base on an asteroid.

• Thomas Lasky: "Infinity's mission is to locate the remaining Halo rings. We've set up permanent bases to study them for decommission. We've got locations up and running around Installations 05 and 03 but...lately they've run into some setbacks."

Trivia

• The Halo 4 E3 2012 Stage Demo is a heavily modified version of this level.
• It is possible to get out of the playable area.
• When the player arrives at the Forerunner structure entrance, there are UNSC crates and weapons in front of it. However, in the cutscene, said crates disappeared.
