The UNSC Infinity is an experimental vessel commissioned into the UNSC Navy following the end of the Human-Covenant War in 2553.[1]
History
Construction
The Infinity is a starship technology demonstrator, using advanced technology recovered during the Human-Covenant War from both Covenant and Forerunner sources.[2]
The ship was constructed in the Oort cloud beyond the Sol system.[2] Secrecy was ensured by having workers permanently stationed there over several years, with a total communications blackout in effect. The ship's massive cost, however, prevented the Office of Naval Intelligence from keeping the Infinity's existence a complete secret; senior members of the Navy, such as Rear Admiral Saeed Shafiq, are fully aware of the ship's existence.[3]
As of March 2553, technology from the recently discovered Sharpened Shield was planned to be incorporated into the ship.[3] Refinements in slipspace navigation, in particular, were expected to push the construction process ahead of schedule. Andrew Del Rio was chosen to be the ship's commanding officer, and several SPARTAN-IV personnel were also assigned to the Infinity before the first trials began.[2] The ship had a sizable contingent of SPARTAN-IVs after its launch as well.[4]
At over 3 kilometers in length, the Infinity is the largest UNSC ship ever built.[5] The ship also contains a state-of-the art combat deck, a training chamber that is capable of replicating environments.[4]
Role in Halo 4
The Infinity plays a major role in Halo 4, serving as the fictional backdrop for the game's competitive multiplayer and Spartan Ops modes. The multiplayer component is grouped together into a game mode known as Infinity, in which players take control of SPARTAN-IV supersoldiers serving aboard the warship. In competitive multiplayer, player-controlled Spartans train against one another in the ship's environment-replicating combat deck, whereas Spartan Ops is a cooperative campaign mode which tasks players with weekly, episodic missions over the course of the Infinity's travels.[4]
