The UNSC Infinity is an experimental vessel commissioned into the UNSC Navy following the end of the Human-Covenant War in 2553.[1]
History
Construction
The Infinity is a starship technology demonstrator, using advanced technology recovered during the Human-Covenant War from both Covenant and Forerunner sources.[2]
The ship was constructed in the Oort cloud beyond the Sol system.[2] Secrecy was ensured by having workers permanently stationed there over several years, with a total communications blackout in effect. The ship's massive cost, however, prevented the Office of Naval Intelligence from keeping the Infinity's existence a complete secret; senior members of the Navy, such as Rear Admiral Saeed Shafiq, are aware of the ship's existence.[3]
As of March 2553, technology from the recently discovered Sharpened Shield was planned to be incorporated into the ship.[3] Refinements in slipspace navigation, in particular, were expected to push the construction process ahead of schedule. Andrew Del Rio was chosen to be the ship's commanding officer, and several SPARTAN-IV personnel were also assigned to the Infinity before the first trials began.[2]
