The UNSC Monte Cassino is a destroyer in service with the UNSC Navy after the Human-Covenant War.[1] As of January 2553, the ship's executive officer is Commander Cerny.[2]
Background
On January 2553, the UNSC Ariadne experienced reactor complications and was forced to drop out of slipspace near Venezia. Having received no assistance from the Insurrectionist-controlled colony, Ariadne sent a message to Earth asking for help. Two days later the Monte Cassino was dispatched - both to evacuate the ship's crew and to rendezvous with the Template:UNSCship for a personnel transfer. Slipspace time dilation effects caused a five-hour delay, however - the reactor exploded before any help could arrive, and the Ariadne was lost with all hands.
The Monte Cassino then conducted search-and-rescue operations in Venezia's orbit, but the ship was fired upon by paranoid ground forces with a Covenant T-38 "Tyrant" anti-air cannon. The ship evaded fire and easily destroyed the cannon with missiles. Prior to the Monte Cassino's return trip to Earth, the Port Stanley transferred ONI operative Mike Spenser and civilian Tom Muir to the ship.
