Character compatibility is the set of animations for weapons that a particular player model has that basically decide what weapons that model can wield. Most of these animations are not used, however can be tested using modding. This does not include swapping the actual character models - for example, swapping Marine character models with Grunts allows Grunts to throw Frag Grenades. This only applies to swapping weapons, otherwise everyone could use every weapon. This information is not absolutely guaranteed to be accurate, as not all combinations have been tested, some have been assumed based on the results of other weapon wield tests.

Halo: Combat Evolved

Spartan

The Spartan II can use all weapons in Halo: Combat Evolved except the Energy Sword. The Fuel Rod Gun is only usable in Halo: PC.

UNSC Marine

Though there is no apparent reason why, the UNSC Marine cannot use the M6D Pistol or Plasma Pistol in the Halo: Combat Evolved game, even though it is in canon. They can not use the Rocket Launcher. (Test: Swap Assault Rifle meta to the Rocket Launcher in Assault on the Control room, and go to the outdoor part - not the bridge though. The three or so marines there - one will have a Needler, the other a Plasma Rifle, and one marine without a weapon at all because he can't use the Rocket Launcher).

Unggoy

Kig-Yar

Sangheili

Elites can only use one-handed weapons (e.g. Plasma Rifle). For any other weapons, modding must be used to make the weapon one-handed.

Hunter

The Hunter can only use the Hunter Fuel Rod that is mounted on its arm. In Halo game physics, it is actually a separate model, not part of the Hunter itself. This is technically a different weapon to the Fuel Rod that Grunts use, because they're different weapons in the coding.
