Members of the UNSC Navy wear a variety of uniforms for the purposes of identification, formality, comfort, and practicality.
Dress uniform
The UNSC Navy dress uniform differs little from those worn by members of the United States Navy five hundred years previously. It consists of a white jacket, white trousers, and a peaked cap for males and a tricorn hat for females. Those ranked Commander and above wear gold "scrambled egg" oak leaves on their caps, while Flag Officers may wear aiguillettes with the jacket. Medals and ribbons are worn on the left hand side of this uniform.
Service uniform
Officers
The 2553 service dress variant consists of a gray shirt and a matching pair of trousers, secured with a belt. In times of war a pistol is worn on the belt. A name tag displaying the officer's last name is mounted on the right hand side of the uniform while ribbons are worn on the left hand side. Rank insignia is displayed on the shirt cuffs, collar, and shoulder boards. Medals and caps are typically not worn with this uniform, though Fleet Admiral Sir Terrence Hood was an exception to this rule.
It should be noted that Captain Jacob Keyes wore an unusual uniforn variant that was coloured a lighter gray than usual. Most notably, it apparently lacked rank insignia of any kind, though ribbons were worn with the uniform as well as a name tag.
Enlisted
Non-commissioned officers wore a reddish-coloured variant of the uniform that apparently did not display ribbons or rank insignia.
