The 8 MJ LRG Rail Gun[1] was an artillery weapon used on the SP42 Cobra and as a weapon attachment upgrade to a standard UNSC prefabricated base turret.[2] It was primarily designed for use against enemy fortifications, but excelled at taking down vehicles as well. When used on the Base Turret, rail guns add a bonus antivehicle attack to the turret and possess the ability to deliver a super-dense 105mm slug at high speeds to disable vehicles. When mounted on Cobras, it was usually only fired when in a secure, locked-down position. It could deliver devastating damage at a very long range thanks to its large explosive shell and was able to destroy hostile vehicles with ease. [3]
Trivia
- "8 MJ" may refer to 8 Mega-Joules, or the energy required to operate the weapon attachment, but this is just pure speculation.
- Much like how the Base Turret's M202 XP Machine Gun may be detached at will, the Rail Cannons most likely can act as stand-alone weapon emplacements or be attached to other vehicles.
- Other than the 16 MJ LRG Rail Gun, the 8 MJ is the only known rail gun in UNSC's arsenal. Other common magnetic acceleration weapons use a different principle of operation and are referred to as a coilgun or Gauss gun.
