| He wakes up to the blaring alarm clock and strides across the worn wooden floor to the bathroom with a sloping and exhausted step. He starts the freezing shower and shivers a large red scar sprawled atop his back. He lays his head against the wall and dozes off but is soon jolted awake by the roar of a passing fire truck. Shivering he strolls out into the hall the cold air chills his soaked skin. He peers into his closet, grabs a dry-cleaned and plastic wrapped outfit, and then tosses it onto the bed. He dries off and buttons his shirt up in the mirror before using his hands to push down his wet hair. Jacket in hand, he steps out into the street and the smog filled air thick with car exhaust and starts his long walk toward work.
| |
| He has worked at a printing press for years at wage barely above the minimum but he did not mind. He was not some spiffy columnist or anything he just worked the presses as thick smog billowed out. The work was monotonous but at the same time elementary so he did not mind. The only downside was the constant ridicule of his yapping supervisor no matter how hard he would work. After his grinding day of work he returned home, slumped down into his battered-old chair and watched the monochrome television advertise a new device called a microwave oven that could cook food within minutes. After a while he would saunter into his small dank kitchen and cook a meager and simple meal. Then he would simply just go to bed and restart his boring cycle but this next day was different.
| |
| He awoke but felt a certain uneasiness in the air and was alert the whole time he was in the shower as if he knew something was coming but didn’t know what. When he climbed out soaked as usual he held his shivering back and peered out the door to see nothing. When he finally felt secure he walked out and toward the closet. As he reached in he was grabbed from behind and they put a cloth over his mouth and he caught a peculiar smell. Before he could react his legs gave out and he succumbed to the concoction and passed out. He awoke chained down in a chair the bright lights blinding him. His entire body ached and there were men in suits in every corner of the room. He yelled at them asking what they want from him but they just stood in silence. A stiff aging man stepped into the room his piercing eyes fixed on Jack. “Well Mr. Jack Nife is that your real name or some type of hoodlum name?” he said with an insincere grin. Before he could answer he started again “We have been watching you for some time now and I think you should come with me.” He unchained Jack and stepped through a large metal door Jack in tow carefully scanning every inch as he went. As they ventured the slow walk Jack kept his eyes forward and it started to seem awkward as neither said a thing.
| |
| “What kind of place is⎯” he was quickly cut off.
| |
| “Research facility” he mumbled not turning back. Jack stopped puzzled at his vague answer. He quickened pace not wanting to be left behind.
| |
| “But a research facility for what and why am I here” Jack inquired with mistrust. “Do you work for the government and by the way…” he peers back at curious Jack “who are you?”
| |
| He chuckles and spins around with a crooked chagrin “you are the inquisitive type aren’t you?” he asks rhetorically. “Well we are a group committed to the research and containment of al extraterrestrial life with the hostile intentions” he began. “I lead this organization and I am Colonel Forge of the 501st Legion.”
| |
| “I don’t understand what are extra-whatevers, who is this legion, and who pays for all of this?” he quickly asked becoming angrier every vague, indirect answer he was given.
| |
| “We are a small group with a few government contracts and donations from a few generous benefactors and extra terrestrials are aliens, you know little green men.” He said with a smirk. Jack opened his mouth as if he was about to say something but abruptly closed it and let his head down. Satisfied Forge said “keep going as they stepped through the next set of metal doors.
