The Sigma Octanus IV Artifact is a Forerunner artifact first identified as such when it was on display in the Côte d'Azur Museum of Natural History on Sigma Octanus IV.
Description
The artifact contained a star chart embedded with coordination to the Soell System, where Installation 04 is located, and another to Reach.
Background
The artifact arrived on the planet as a form of a meteor in 57,448 B.C.E. Some 60,000 years later, human inhabitants of the planet placed the artifact in a Côte d'Azur Museum of Natural History.
During the Covenant invasion of Sigma Octanus IV, the Covenant attempted to seize the artifact from the museum, only to have the operation foiled by the SPARTAN-II Blue Team. Knowing that that gravity of the planet's condition is well beyond them, the SPARTANs took several scans of the artifact and placed a HAVOK tactical warhead inside the museum. The artifact was later destroyed, along with the museum and the city around it.
Scans of the artifact were later given to Cortana and Dr. Halsey, whom attempted to decrypt it as a language. During the Fall of Reach, Cortana successfully translated the artifact in a form of a star chart instead of a language, leading the UNSC Pillar of Autumn and its crew to Installation 04.
