A Banished torture machine inside the Tower.

The Banished utilize torture machines to interrogate prisoners. Within this device, a prisoner is trapped behind an energy barrier while also being suspended by torture manacles around the arms and legs. The machine uses micro gravity wells to inflict excruciating pain on the victim, in a manner similar to the gravitational refinement device used by the Prophet of Exquisite Devotion.[1]

History[edit]

During the Battle for Zeta Halo, the Sangheili Warlord Chak 'Lok used these machines at his fortress, the Tower, to brutally torture and interrogate UNSC POWs, including Spartan Hudson Griffin and combat medic Lucas Browning. On May 28, 2560, Master Chief John-117 stormed the Tower, slew Chak 'Lok, and freed Griffin from the machine. Unfortunately, Griffin died from his injuries shortly thereafter.[2]

Later, War Chief Escharum had Fernando Esparza placed inside a torture machine at the House of Reckoning.[1] He then broadcasted Esparza's torture live via hologram to John-117 in order to force the Master Chief into a final confrontation.[3] When the Chief arrived at the House of Reckoning and faced him, Escharum linked his personal energy shield to the torture machine so that any damage the Master Chief tried to inflict on him was transferred to Esparza instead. The Weapon exposed the relays powering Escharum's shield, enabling the Chief to disable the shield without further harming Esparza. After defeating Escharum, John-117 and the Weapon freed Esparza from the machine.[1]
