The Shuku-pattern sentry turret[1] (UNSC Type-designation: Automated Plasma Turret, APT)[2][3] is an automated stationary weapon built by the Covenant for the protection of sectors of interest.[1] Among UNSC personnel, they are sometimes nicknamed "Plasma Walls".[2][3]

Overview

Design details

The turret rests on an anti-gravity field emitted from a large tripod. The actuator plug that drives the weapon functions is considered semi-intelligent, obeying its directives with absolute precision.[1][4] Shuku-pattern turrets are usually placed alongside A'uo'i-pattern sensor emplacement for target acquisition.[1]

Usage

Shuku-pattern turrets were once employed by the Covenant to guard important outposts. Following the end of the Human-Covenant War and fall of the Covenant, many turrets remain active at their sectors, ready to engage trespassers that do not transmit the corresponding authorization codes, now impossible to acquire with the fall of High Charity.[1]

Shuku turrets are extremely powerful, capable of completely bypassing energy shielding (including augments such as overshielding) to attack a target directly. This functionality means that they are generally only used at sites where other forms of protection may lack sufficient lethality.[2][3]

Operational history

Shuku-pattern turrets were deployed in a perimeter surrounding a Covenant outpost on Strilun IV.[5][1] As of 2552, mechanical details of the turret, such as its plasma ammunition, remain unknown to the United Nations Space Command - pending treaty negotiations with the Sangheili.[2][3]

In-game information

Halo 3

Sentry turrets are exclusively found on the multiplayer map Snowbound in Halo 3. They surround the map's perimeter facing away from the bases in the middle, serving as The Guardians for the map; if a player attempts to leave the playable area of the map, they shoot them with rapid-fire plasma shots which can kill quickly. They can shoot through Bubble Shields, Overshields and Invincibility equipment easily though, as with the Shrine defender towers on Sandtrap/Sandbox, can be overloaded and rendered nonfunctional via a glitch.

Production notes

In the original 2009 and 2011 editions of the Halo Encyclopedia, a text panel discussing the Shuku sentry turret can be found in the section on Covenant turrets. The text in the section discusses the Shuku, referencing in-game effects from its Halo 3 incarnation such as its ability to shoot through bubble shields, overshields, and invincibility power-ups; however, the image provided to represent the turret is erroneously a Zo'op-pattern Weevil artillery piece from Halo 2.[2][3]
