The Mako-class corvette was a classification of corvette employed by the naval forces of both the Colonial Military Authority and United Nations Space Command, among other human military groups.[1]
Overview
Design details
The Mako measured only 162 metres (532 ft) in length, and massed in at a total mass of 28,000 metric tons (28,000 LT; 31,000 ST).[1] Mako-class ships were generally well-regarded (in no small part due to their small size[2]), but hated by shipyard personnel due to numerous maintenance issues.[1]
Armaments
The Mako-class was lightly armed, featuring two Mark 40 Castor naval coilguns and two M42 Archer missile pods for anti-ship combat. For defence, it was equipped with two M870 Rampart point defense guns.[1]
Ships of the line
- UNSC Mako - lead ship
- UNSC Pony Express - Recommended by Lord Terrence Hood for Blue Team to use to get to Onyx.
Operational history
The Mako-class entered service in 2388, and rapidly became one of the most ubiquitous examples of the corvette role throughout human space. During its long career, the Mako was used by many military organisations including the UNSC Navy, CMA Navy and other security forces throughout the Sol system and extrasolar colonies.[1] The Mako's maintenance issues would eventually gain it infamy in the shipyards where it was serviced, ultimately leading to the UNSC Navy choosing to retire it in the early stages of the Human-Covenant War.[2][1] Most surviving examples were pushed into rear second-line defensive fleets for the duration of the war.[1]
By 2525, several such corvettes had fallen into the Eridanus rebels at their asteroid base of Eridanus Secundus - used by the rebels as part of their improvised fleet.[3][3]
One Mako-class, the UNSC Pony Express, was still in service with the UNSC as late as 2552.[4]
