Codename: COALMINER is an ONI operative.
In 2552, COALMINER was involved in the classified project Operation: HYPODERMIC. COALMINER detected an intrusion, but not the identity of the intruder, into the ONI database which threatened to compromise HYPODERMIC, and informed Codename: SURGEON of the security breach. To minimize the damage COALMINER deleted the UNSC Circumference from the database of Reach Station Gamma[1].
This would cause difficulties later during the Battle of Reach as it prevented the AI Doppler from erasing the Circumference's NAV database as per the Cole Protocol, and requiring a SPARTAN-II team to destroy the ship.
