Template:Ship Class Infobox The Calypso-class exfiltration craft is a specialized type of UNSC spacecraft used for off-planet extraction. The Calypso fulfills a purpose similar to Black Cat-class subprowler.

Design

The Calypso-class recovery dropship is a robust troop transport designed for rapid transfers and exfiltration. They are one of the smallest UNSC craft to be equipped with a slipspace drive, which is powerful enough for a short and quick jump but not capable of longer transitions; however, they are still capable of crossing modest interstellar distances.[1][2] Calypsos are more forgiving of a pilot under fire than a Pelican due to their rudimentary design.[3] However, being designed for speed rather than comfort, they are also exceedingly uncomfortable for the occupants, particularly when jumping into slipspace.[4]

Service history

Entering service around the 2520s,[1] Calypso-class exfiltration craft were in use in throughout the Human-Covenant War, most notably during Operation: PROMETHEUS in 2537.[5] In late 2552, a Calypso exfiltration craft was dispatched to transport ONI agent Connor Brien off a Covenant-occupied Beta Gabriel, where Brien had been observing a Jiralhanae pack.[6] They were considered outdated by 2553.[1] By that year, the Venezian militia had acquired a few of these craft. Staffan Sentzke suggested letting the Huragok, Sometimes Sinks, upgrade one of the militia's Calypsos.[7]

Trivia

In Greek mythology, Calypso was a daughter of Atlas who imprisoned Odysseus for seven years during his voyage home to Ithaca in Homer's epic, The Odyssey. This could be a reference to the number seven.
