Basic Information
The Fury Tactical Nuke was the closest thing the UNSC had in it's arsenal to a nuclear grenade. It was the size and shape of an overinflated football. It delivered slightly less than a megaton yield, and was extremely clean."[1] It was easy to use and effective at destroying anything from an enemy base to a Covenant Cruiser, although you would have to get the Fury Tactical Nuke inside first. Then beginning the detonation sequence would be required if not already set. One other notable fact is that the radius of a Fury Tactical Nuke explosion is about 1.2 km in diameter, which may be an advantage or disadvantage depending on any given situation.
Known Uses
During the attack on Reach, Spartans Frederic-104, Kelly-087, and Joshua-029 (AKA Alpha Team) destroyed a Covenant Cruiser by capturing a trio of Banshees and throwing a Tactical Nuke into its grav-lift during the First Battle of Reach. The reason for this style of attack was due to the electro magnetic pulse (EMP) given off by the warhead. By throwing the Fury Tactical Nuke into the grav-lift the Fury Tactical Nuke entered the Cruiser's hull. This tactic used the Covenant Cruiser's own shield to buffer most of the EMP and essentially prevented damage to the generators powering the Orbital MAC guns orbiting Reach. Another reason for this tactic was that the Fury Tac-nuke's explosion rebounded upon itself inside of the cruiser absolutely gutting the cruiser and protecting the three Spartans flying away. Kelly remarked that "It'll also turn that ship into the biggest fragmentation grenade in history,"[2]. By destroying the Covenant Cruiser they halted an initial invasion force. "It (the valley) was a sea of flame. Hundreds of fires dotted the cracked glassy ground. Where the Big Horn River had snaked along, there was now only a long steaming furrow. There was no trace of the cruiser or the Covenant troops that had filled the valley moments ago. All that remained was a field of smoldering, twisted bone and metal...Ten thousand Covenant deaths...Perhaps they had bought enough time for the orbital MAC guns to tip the battle overhead..."[3] This description shows how the three Spartans kept the Covenant fleet from being able to reinforce their troops or at at the very least delayed them. Additionally, this allowed the UNSC force to attempt to hold out in the space battle for Reach.
