Spikes of Obesience, also known as Covenant comm relays,[1] or comm nodes,[2] are mobile communication devices that were used by the Covenant on the battlefield. The first link in the Covenant's command and control of their ground units began with the placement of these Spikes in areas they intended to dominate.[1]

Description

Comm nodes, known as Spikes of Obesience by the Covenant, were used by the hegemony as a means to connect to their battle network and functioned as a combination of proselytization network uplinks, communication hubs, and sensor relay nodes.[1] The Spikes are tall devices, consisting of a stalk protruding from a central structure which is supported by a trio of "legs." The nodes are primarily dark pink, black, and silver in color.[3] In "'Halo 2"' the node does not have legs, but it makes the same buzzing noise as the later titles up to Halo: Reach which suggests the sfx has been recycled a lot. Variants with the antenna not deployed are sparsely found aswell with one on uprising being in the brutes trophy room where the elite makes a remark that the weapons are worthless.

History

Comm relays were used extensively during the Covenant's vicious assault on the planet Reach,[3] as well as during the Battle of Earth[4] and the Battle of Installation 00.[5]

Trivia

  • The comm will remain active if one of its legs has been broken off, and it can still be picked up in Forge. To fully destroy it, one must break the tower off the base.[2]
  • On the main body of the node, something resembling the Marathon symbol can clearly be seen.[3]
