Ellen Anders held in the containment field device at the Apex Site.

The Forerunners constructed energy field-projecting devices with the purpose of physically restraining a person or object. Typically, such devices are comprised of two rings which emit an energy field which encircles and restrains a prisoner or any held object. Similar technology was later used by the Covenant.

Apex Site

The Apex Site located on Shield 0459 possessed a containment field device, which also functioned as a translocation pad. Both of these functions could be operated by vocal commands. When containment was activated a ring would hover above the held object, connecting the containment field to another ring on the floor. When the field was disengaged, the upper ring would rapidly fall into a socket in the floor. There was a similar device on the surface of the shield world, though it is unknown if it was just the receiving end for the teleportation system.

The Covenant used this particular containment field device as a holding cell for Professor Ellen Anders before using her to activate the inert Forerunner dreadnoughts docked within the facility.[1]

Sanctum of the Hierarchs

A similar, though not identical device was seen in center of the inner chamber of the Sanctum of the Hierarchs within High Charity. Likely a Covenant application of the Forerunner technology, it was used to hold 343 Guilty Spark in a stasis field in which it was unable to move. Instead of a thick, very conspicuous torrent of energy, the energy field holding Spark in place was barely visible. The field emitter systems were also stationary.[2]
