::To Ashfire: Your first statement is correct. Your assertion about there being fire in space is also somewhat correct. In certain conditions, an explosion could be seen. This could happen if a round penetrates the hull and causes the ship to vent atmosphere. The escaping gases would linger long enough for a very brief explosion to be seen before dispersing throughout the local space. I'mm not sure about plasma in a MAC round's wake...could be plausible if the fields and air friction combine to superheat and ionize the surrounding air to extreme temperatures. You bring up a good point about vacuums: on Cairo Station when you exit to battle the Elites in jumpjets, there should be absolutely '''no''' sound, as the vacuum gives nothing for sound to oscillate off of.

::To the others contributing in this section: the MAC does not use propellant to accelerate the projectile; it uses magnetic fields and coils. See the little video clip at the top of the MAC article. That's the principle at work here. As for energy dissipation, some of it can be dispersed through vents in the gun's path, much the same as gases are dispersed in modern day weapons. However, some energy will inevitably come out of the barrel, and this could produce a flash depending on the chemical structure of what exactly is exiting the barrel. If it's just pure energy (like electricity for example), then it will more than likely remain invisible to the naked eye. A Gauss has a flash because it operates in an atmosphere, thus the chemicals and effects at work in coil/railguns are visible. In space, the 'rippling' effect generated by a Gauss cannon may be be visible, but may not, depending on what exactly generates it. My guess is that the heat and energy generated by firing creates this appearance. As such, it would be visible in space, but the flash more than likely would not. Before the Covenant invasion of Reach, there were 20 of these super Mac Cannons, if you follow the link I put in you can find sufficient information on the orbital defense platforms.
