From Halopedia, the Halo wiki

m (Talk:Master Sergeant Gunns moved to Talk:Master Gunnery Sergeant "Gunns": See my reasoning in the talk page, "Master Guns" isn't proper slang for a Master Sergeant with the last name of Gunns, it's an informal title for a Master Gunnery Sergeant.)

Yea, I'm changing his name to Master Gunnery Sergeant (Armorer, name unknown) because "Master Guns" isn't a proper term for a Master Sergeant, even if his last name is Gunns... and he's an armorer. For the record, Master Sergeants are informally referred to as "Top Hat" or just "Top," so that's not it. Anyway, if the title came from Bungie and not just people who didn't know assuming, I guess changing it wouldn't be a big deal (everybody's calling a SgtMaj-in the field, no doubt-a Sgt and nobody's had their necks broken, so terrible accuracy isn't exactly Halo's specialty...) but I'd still like to see it from Bungie, not an ignorant (but well-meaning) fan. --[[User:RoadDoggFL|RoadDoggFL]] 04:52, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

A Master Gunnery Sergeant is the exact same pay grade as a Sergeant Major in the United States Marines.
And it is common to hear US Marines calling Master Gunnery Sergeants "Master Gunns".
