Because of his many years of constant combat and military conditioning however, John is not as emotional or sensitive as he once was, especially to fear. The Spartans in his past, Cortana, and Dr Halsey, being the only family he really ever had, assume a larger-than-life importance for John-117. He has been known to have vivid and long-enduring memories of the past, such as in dreams. No matter how well-adjusted he is, however, John always seems to need to have a quiet place away from crowds after a battle in order to feel at peace.

John and [[Thel 'Vadam]]'s first meeting on Delta Halo was hostile with Thel continuing to refer to the SPARTAN as "Demon" despite John's insistence that the San'Shyuum were making a "big mistake" (activating the Halos). Upon their next meeting on Earth, John was quick to try and kill the Sangheili before Johnson stopped him. While they seemed weary of one another, they eventually learned to trust each other in combat against the Covenant up to the point where they watched each other's back on Installations 00 and 04B. Thel was the last one to see John alive before the latter went missing-in-action after the war, and it was that moment they shared a genuine nod of comraderie before they escaped the Ark's destruction.

Upon their next meeting on Earth, John was quick to try and kill the Sangheili before Johnson stopped him. They remained initially wary of one another, but they learned to trust each other in combat against the Covenant and the Flood. Thel proved his trustworthiness to John by actions like helping him rescue Sergeant Johnson, or counseling the Elites to not glass all of Earth when the Flood arrived on it. When they reached the Ark, the two's reliance on each other was cemented, and John showed respect for Thel by letting him by the one to kill the Prophet of Truth. Thel was the last one to see John alive before the latter went missing-in-action after the war, and afterward expressed to Lord Hood mild doubt that John might be dead.
