The ranking system in Halo: Reach is based on credits (cR) earned through Forge, Multiplayer, Campaign, and Firefight matches. Credits are earned after every game, and players earn extra credits for medals earned during the match, (e.g. Double Kills) victory bonuses, commendations, and Daily/Weekly challenges.
Overview
There is a total of 50 ranks available for players. As previously mentioned, these ranks can be obtained by gaining credits from the game. These credits can also be used to purchase armor permutations for the player's character model (spending credits in this way does not affect ranking).
Offline, the easiest ways to earn Credits are to either play Custom Games or, even easier, use Forge mode or firefight . However, after an account has been connected to Xbox LIVE, all modes are significantly lower than those awarded for playing multiplayer via Xbox Live or campaign. It should be noted that when an account is not immediately connected LIVE, but it is instead played offline and has earned ranks offline, the account will lose both several ranks and a large amount of credits when it is connected for the first time.

Trivia
- The ranks after Lt. Colonel Grade 3 were subject to a cap from the launch of Halo: Reach. It was revealed that to unlock this cap, the community had to reach a total of 117 million Daily and Weekly challenges completed. The rank cap was lifted on November 2nd, 2010.[1]
- The daily credit cap is 120,000 cR.[verification needed]
- The Commander Grade 3 rank insignia lacks the two grade bars in-game.
- The last seven ranks are loosely based off of the last seven ranks of Halo 2.
- As the player levels up through the game they will notice that they will start to earn credits faster. For example when the players rank is Captain they will earn about 4000 credits a hour, however when the player's rank is Commander they will earn about 9000 credits a hour.
