It was the first vessel within the UNSC Navy to be equipped with a [[Magnetic Accelerator Cannon]], a weapon system that would later become the standard armament of most UNSC naval ships.<ref group="note">Although the name the ship's class is not mentioned, the UNSC ''Gorgon'' is stated to be the first of its class. Naval classifications take the name for the ship series after the name of the first ship, thus making ships built with the same design members of the ''Gorgon'' class.</ref>
