During the freezing and resuscitation process, cloth or other material next to the skin causes cellular damage, resulting in large welts or rashes on the covered areas, described as a making the skin "blistered and raw". Most UNSC personnel are stored in cryo either naked to avoid freezer burn, or clothed and willing to endure the injuries. [[Spartans]], for example, can be stored in cryo-preservation fully clad in [[MJOLNIR]] [[armor]] without the effects dulling their combat performance. It's not known if this is because they simply ignore the injury, or if the advanced materials mean that they do not suffer from it. Though the latter is likely not the case, as the Master Chief was noted for not having freezer burn after being resuscitated from cryo-sleep, suggesting that it is possible occurrence.
