An Orbital Defense Platform is a small space station that is, in theory, in geosynchronous orbit over a city on Earth for which it is named. On board the station is a small contingent of Marines, apparently as a defense force in the event of an enemy boarding. The station's main purpose and feature is its Mark V "Super" MAC gun, which is capable of destroying a Covenant ship with a single hit. The station also has two docking spaces for UNSC ships, apparently available to evacuate station personnel or for other miscellaneous activities.

Super MAC Platforms were first mentioned in the book Halo: The Fall of Reach (there were twenty defending the military strong hold Reach, running off power from generators on the planet), and the Spartans were sent to defend them in order to buy the UNSC ships in space more time, but eventually failed. After the fall of Reach, a UNSC officer wanted to send a small battle group to the Epsilon Eridani system to learn its fate and look for survivors, but Colonel James Ackerson refused to allow it, saying the UNSC needed all the ships they could get to defend earth until the new Orbital Defense was up. This eventually turned out to be 300 hundred Super MAC’s around Earth for all round defense.
By August 2552, Reach was protected by twenty Super MAC platforms powered by generators located on the planet.  During the Battle of Reach, Spartans were deployed to protect these generators, but were ultimately unable to do so against determined assaults by Covenant troops. The disabling of the defense platforms was a major factor on the battles outcome.

Cairo, a typical Orbital Defense Platform.

An Orbital Defense Platform was a small UNSC space station used to defend locations of great importance. Many stations were placed in a geosynchronous orbit] over planets. Primary armament was a Mk. V "Super" MAC gun, capable of causing severe damage to even a shielded Covenant warship with a single hit[1].

Facilities

Internally, the stations were remarkably spacious, complete with high ceilinged common areas and a monorail system to move personnel and equipment. In addition to numerous small craft bays there were two docks for larger ships, such as freighters or even frigates. The design incorporated many features against potential hostile boarding action, including security stations and small arms racks situated at strategic locations[2]. Template:Cairo Locations

Deployment

Reach

By August 2552, Reach was protected by twenty Super MAC platforms powered by generators located on the planet. During the Battle of Reach, Spartans were deployed to protect these generators, but were ultimately unable to do so against determined assaults by Covenant troops. The disabling of the defense platforms was a major factor on the battles outcome[3].

The destruction of Malta

The outbreak of the Human-Covenant War prompted a massive expansion of Earth's defenses. Even as late as the Battle of Reach preparations had not yet been completed[4]. By October 2552, some 300 ODPs were operational[5]. Many of Earth's ODPs were named after points of interest that they roughly kept station over.

A portion of the 300 platforms saw action at the First Battle of Earth. Athens Station and Malta Station were each destroyed by an Anti-Matter Bomb placed by Covenant boarding parties, with Cairo Station narrowly avoiding the same fate[6].

The ODPs would fire in anger again at the Second Battle of Earth[7].
