I'm wondering when will any information from Halo Reach be aplied to This page for example the article mentions the possibility of a Super Carrier haveing a Energy Projector when it is shown using it in a campain cutscene(end of Tip of the Spear).Dragrath1 20:31, September 20, 2010 (UTC) | I'm wondering when will any information from Halo Reach be aplied to This page for example the article mentions the possibility of a Super Carrier haveing a Energy Projector when it is shown using it in a campain cutscene(end of Tip of the Spear).Dragrath1 20:31, September 20, 2010 (UTC)
:Nothing new is revealed in Reach. I have a new theory/claim to discuss, something that's been on my mind for a while. I'm not sure if we should assume that the name "energy projector" refers exclusively to the weapon used in glassing. That is one of the weapons to which the label is applied, yes, but I think several mentions of the name seem to imply that the same name is sometimes used to refer to the plasma turrets that fire plasma torpedoes. Now, the reason I assume this is because some of the ships that defended the Unyielding Hierophant were stated to have "a dozen deadly energy projectors". I seriously doubt any Covenant ship would have a dozen weapons as powerful as the one mounted on the supercruiser at the Fall of Reach, or even as powerful as their glassing beams. This is why I think there are different kinds of energy projectors and the name doesn't always refer to one type in particular.
In addition, the weapon that Keyes first saw during the Reach space battle - the one firing needle-thin lances of plasma that could cut through any ship at incredible ranges, is clearly a different kind of energy projector than the one commonly used in glassing. Not only was it mounted to the top of the ship, but if it was the same as the one used in glassing, then why would Keyes be unfamiliar with it? He must've seen the Covenant use their glassing weapons before. This implies that the weapon was something very different, and much more powerful than anything they have on most of their ships. Not only that, but the weapon used in glassing seems to operate on a different principle. While the supercruiser's beam weapon fired needle-thin particle beams at light speed, the glassing beam is evidently composed of magnetically contained plasma that is released once the beam impacts the ground.
Granted, Fred says that "only the big ships have them" in First Strike, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that his statement disproves the whole idea. Only the big ships have torpedo-firing plasma turrets as well, and it all depends on how you define "big ship". Still, the wording used is arguably in favor of the idea that the glassing beam and the supercruiser's particle beam are one and the same, but further evidence and the weapons' differences seem to disprove this.
Ghosts of Onyx takes it further. In the book, it seems that "energy projector" is used in the place of "plasma turret" when describing starship weaponry. I'm not sure about the whole book, but having skimmed through the significant space battle sections, it seems the term is used to refer to any plasma-projecting weapons on Covenant ships, which makes sense, really. "Energy projector", as a term, doesn't describe how powerful or accurate the weapon is, it's just a weapon that projects energy.
In conclusion, it seems to me that "energy projector" is not a single weapon like the article seems to suggest. It can refer to a variety of starship-mounted plasma/particle beam turrets, ranging from the glassing beams to the plasma torpedo turrets and the particle weapon mounted on the supercruiser. I'm obviously not proposing to remove anything, just that we sort out the different types and sizes of the weapon on the page, including the underbelly weapon used in glassing ("Glassing port" as named in Reach), the forward turret used in excavation ("Excavation beam" as identified in ODST), and finally, the supercruiser's beam cannon. In addition, if we assume that the plasma turret is also a form of energy projector, it should also be mentioned and linked here. --Jugus (Talk | Contribs) 18:50, September 22, 2010 (UTC) |
