Mateas is a young UNSC Technical Officer stationed aboard the vessel UNSC Down Out and Go.[1]

Biography[edit]

In 2559, during the Created conflict, he routinely accompanied Lieutenant Parisa during her six-month stay onboard the Down Out and Go, taking her out of cryogenic sleep and guiding her to her various covert mission briefings with her AI, Oliver. However, on account of the Lieutenant’s unique condition and memory capacity, she had no recollection of Mateas or of even being transferred to the Down Out and Go.[1]

After awakening Parisa from her cryo pod so she could participate in Operation: HOURGLASS, Mateas escorted the lieutenant to her shuttle for her classified hologram briefing, one that Mateas had only heard had something to do with a Spartan. After Parisa had learned about her memory loss condition and next mission, which entailed delivering an encryption key to an important military asset, Mateas returned with a sheet of folded paper containing the massive encryption code. Once Parisa had glanced at and memorized all 276 lines of code, Mateas immediately destroyed the paper in Parisa's hands by torching it. As he then hurried off the shuttle for her departure, Parisa sought further clarity on her mission and asked him about her asset, the Master Chief, prompting Mateas to merely laugh on the spot, much to Parisa's annoyance. After Parisa reminded him of their respective ranks, Mateas simply promised her that it wouldn't happen again and promptly left so she could deploy into deep space.[1]

Personality and traits[edit]

During the short time they interacted before they parted ways, Officer Mateas displayed a casual and carefree attitude while assisting Lieutenant Parisa, most likely due to knowing that Parisa would end up forgetting him every time. Parisa found him particularly irritating due to his refusal to provide any straightforward answers to her questions.[1]

Production notes[edit]

Mateas debuted in the audio series Halo Infinite: Memory Agent, and was voiced by Jackson Gutierrez in Chapter 1: Operation Hourglass.[2]
