The Lockout Flood Research Facility.

Flood Research Facilities are locations scattered throughout the galaxy where the Forerunners attempted to find a cure or a solution to destroy the Flood.

Background

The Forerunners, created these facilities to conduct research on The Flood. These facilities include the multiplayer map Lockout, the Gas Mine in Threshold's atmosphere, and the largest one (inadvertently), The Library.

These facilities are viewable only in Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2, due to the fact that Halo 3 is played on Installation 00, one of the few Forerunner Installations not sporting a Flood Research Facility, due to security reasons.

Unfortunately, the research facilities were unable to find a solution, other than finding that the Flood was susceptible to starvation. Thus, the Forerunners had to fire the Halo Array in order to eradicate the Flood threat.

Now, these facilities have either been destroyed, or are now uninhabited by sentient life.

Trivia

  • It is hypothesized that Installation 05 experienced a Flood Containment Breach due to the Lockout Containment Facility, where a partially opened containment door can be observed.
  • It can also be assumed that other research facilities are still scattered throughout the universe, alone or in the other Halo Rings.
  • It is also theorized that infected Forerunners are in the flood tubes.
