Torque is an Arena multiplayer map in Halo 5: Guardians. The map is set on Auriga Station, a Lethbridge Industrial research and development space station. It was released as part of the Hammer Storm content update on February 24, 2016.[1]
Overview
The setting of the map is very unique in that the entire playspace takes place on a rotating ring section of a space station. As the ring rotates, the playspace travels through Auriga Station's main section, and the lighting of the map constantly changes due to the position of the map relative to the sun.
Torque is symmetrical and built with the game modes Assault and Capture the Flag in mind. The flow of gameplay is centered around controlling the middle of the map, which contains the Rocket Launcher, and provides an excellent vantage point into the enemy base. Two Gravity Hammers also spawn in the outer corridors of the map. There are several moving pistons on the map that periodically extend and retract, to which the player is alerted by flashing lights and alarms. These pistons dynamically alter the gameplay by opening up shortcuts or providing cover.
Trivia
- Concept art of Torque could already be seen during the Halo 5: Guardians credits and in The Art of Halo 5: Guardians,[2] several months before the map was announced as part of the Hammer Storm update.
- The map is dedicated to community member "thecrzedspartan", who lost his two daughters to a house fire. Out of tribute, the names "Trinity" and "Lena" are spelled out by stars in the sky of the map.[3]
- Torque is the first DLC map in Halo 5: Guardians Arena to be of completely unique origin as opposed to a remix of a previously included map.
- From a technical standpoint, the ring and playspace are actually static while the skybox and the rest of Auriga Station are mobile, creating a sense of rotation.
