Alas, Poor Yorick
Alas, Poor Yorick is a Halo 3 achievement which was unlocked by earning three Oddball melee kills in a single ranked or social match on a Legendary map.[1]
It is worth 25 Gamerscore.
Getting oddball melee kills wasn't overly difficult, but it was extremely challenging to find an Oddball match on a Legendary map in matchmaking.
Following the shutdown of Xbox 360 Halo online services on January 13, 2022, this achievement is no longer attainable.[2][3]
Tips[edit]
- Players could try getting this on either Ghost Town, Avalanche or Blackout. A good strategy was standing behind a corner or in a Bubble shield and when enemies came close melee with the oddball.
- Although rare, this was most easily achieved when playing 3 Ball, one of the Double EXP Weekend playlists.
- Perhaps the best way of getting this achievement, without relying on 3-ball, was in Rumble Pit. Oddball occurred 11% of the time. Even though the playlist did not require all DLC, players needed to have all the maps in the playlist or else they'd get booted out of the game. All maps were equally likely to occur and 5 out of 19 maps were Legendary or Mythic maps. Therefore, the map and gametype needed for the achievement occurred roughly 2.8947% of the time. Odds are, through 35 games in Rumble Pit, players would have at least one shot at the achievement.
Trivia[edit]
- Yorick was the deceased court jester whose skull was exhumed by a gravedigger in Shakespeare's Hamlet. ("Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio.")
- In Halo Wars there is also an achievement with a similar name, Alas, Poor Andrew Thomas, for finding the first skull in the game.
- Some players reported that they needed to achieve the three oddball kills in one life in order to unlock the achievement.
- There is a level in Marathon: Infinity with the same name.
