The health system in Halo 3 is a bit more complicated. Bungie has defined a player as having 115 hit points, 45 body (health) points and 70 shield points. After a player is damaged, their health will begin to slowly regenerate after 10 seconds without taking damage. Health regenerates at 9HP/second, taking about 7.75 seconds to recharge from the brink of death. If you are almost killed but recharge your shield, this does not guarantee safety, as your health is independent. Summary
Health: The player in Halo: Combat Evolved has a limited, non-regenerating health bar, which can only be fully restored by picking up health packs; it is represented by the segmented blue rectangle-like bars in the graphic at the top-right hand corner. Running completely out of health will result in death, but having lower health does not impede player actions or reactions, and one fatal shot (mainly headshots) can kill the player. A player's health can only be reduced if his shields have failed. With five bars left, another hit can turn them yellow. When there are two left, they are yellow or red. If the player's health is down to one bar, the sound of a heart beating can be heard.
In fact, you have ten 'divisions' or 'fractions' of health in Halo:Combat Evolved, rather than the eight that most people think. They are.

Contrary to popular belief, there is a small amount of health in Halo 2. It recharges with the shields as the MJOLNIR armor used in this game injects Biofoam into the user, which heals injuries faster. It also appears that the shield block in in the shield gauge reflects your state of health by a slight change in color.
This information was gathered from a Bungie weekly update on 2/8/08.
In Halo 3: ODST you again have a health bar. Your health can only be damaged after your stamina is depleted. If you take damage your HUD will start to flash red. That means your stamina is being depleted. After it's depleted your health will start to take damage. Your health is represented by a bar at the top of the screen. Due to the fact that you're playing as an ODST, your health will go down much quicker compared to a Spartan-II in MJOLNIR. The only way to restore health is to collect health packs scattered around the city of New Mombasa.
Health Packs
A single health pack will fully restore the player's health, but does not regenerate shields. Health packs are only featured in Halo: Combat Evolved, and Halo 3: ODST.
