Corporal Harland is a veteran Marine who assumed tactical command during the upsided Battle of Sigma Octanus IV after his superior and commanding officers were wiped out by opopsing Covenant forces. Harland and three members of his squad, Private Fincher, Private Cochran, and Private Walker encountered Covenant Hunters and after realising that "Bravo" base and the surrounding area was destroyed by the Covenant, they narrowly won a retreating fight against two Banshees. After returning to the primary headquarters in the city Cote d'Azur, only to find that it was also destroyed with almost no survivors, Harland called for reinforcements, not expecting the SPARTANs.
