The Banished is a mercenary organization and splinter faction of the former Covenant Empire, that rose to power after the conclusion of the Human-Covenant War.[3] Primarily composed of Jiralhanae, in addition to Sangheili, Mgalekgolo, and Unggoy,[1] the organization is well equipped with a wide range of military technology. Atriox, a powerful warlord, serves as the chief of the Banished, as well as the commander of the faction's massive army.[4]
History
Being a splinter group of the former Empire, the Banished fought against the Covenant during their war with humanity, while still also coming into conflict with humans on occasion. Unimpeded by the Covenant's devastating internal conflict, the Sangheili and Jiralhanae could coexist in the Banished with their relationship untainted, and when the Covenant eventually fell, the organization managed to salvage much of the Empire's former power.
In 2559, twenty-eight years after the UNSC Spirit of Fire lost contact with the rest of the United Nations Space Command, the Banished encountered and engaged the ship and its crew at the extra-galactic Forerunner structure known as Installation 00.[3]
Military assets
Having salvaged and repurposed a great deal of Covenant matériel,[3] the Banished are well equipped with a wide range of military technology. The vehicles at their disposal include the Blisterback mobile missile battery, Shroud aerial stealth vehicle, Marauder, and Reaver. They also field the Type-25 Chopper, Type-25 Spirit, Type-26 Banshee, Type-26 Wraith, and Type-32 Ghost, all of which depart from typical Covenant aesthetics. Weapons used by the organization include the Type-1 energy sword, Type-2 gravity hammer, Type-25 Spiker[5] and a mace-like weapon used by Atriox.[6] Most of the infantry personnel of the Banished are equipped with crimson armor, including Jiralhanae power armor, Sangheili combat harnesses and Unggoy combat harnesses.[4] Additionally, the Banished employ specialist Jiralhanae soldiers known as Jump-pack Jiralhanae, who are equipped with jump pack propulsion systems.[5]
