A game of Warzone in progress on the map Escape from ARC

Warzone is multiplayer gametype introduced in Halo 5: Guardians. It will feature large-scale combat with two teams of 12 Spartans facing off against each other on large maps populated by AI-controlled Covenant and Promethean enemies, including named boss units that occasionally appear on the battlefield. A team achieves victory by attaining 1000 points, which are gained by killing both enemy players and AI enemies. In the beginning of a match both teams are dropped to their respective bases via Pelican and have to clear the base of AI enemies. A contingent of AI-controlled Marines aligned with either team is also stationed in each base. There are armories and garages on the map that can be captured by the players to give access to superior weapons and vehicles, respectively, and are part of the Requisition system along with a series of energy levels which determine the players' access to certain types of weaponry and vehicles. The requisition packs allow players to respawn with a certain weapon or in a vehicle of their choosing, with a higher energy level providing access to more powerful items.[1][2]

Another variant of the game mode is a Base Assault attack/defense scenario without AI enemies. In this variation, one team is tasked with defending each base on a map and the other team attempting to capture the case and push the other team back. The defending team must hold the base until a set time limit runs out. As the attacking team manages to capture each base, they force the defending team back and extend the timer until they assault the defenders' home base and must destroy their core.[3]

Six maps will support Warzone at launch while another six will be available as DLC.[4]

The mode is tied to the Halo series fiction as a type of War Games Spartan training simulation. It features opening and closing cutscenes and Spartan Commander Sarah Palmer in the place of the Arena multiplayer announcer.[1][5] Some of the maps built for Warzone have been said to be four times larger than those in prior Halo games.[2]
