The proximity mine is a Covenant explosive device. The grenade has a similar appearance to a Covenant antimatter charge.[1][2] After being set off, the mine fires a series of needler projectiles in all directions.[3]
During the Battle of Ariel, Taylor "Dutch" Miles and Kojo "Romeo" Agu threw one of these explosives at a group of Grunts. The Grunts, not realizing the device wasn't armed (Dutch and Romeo didn't know how to arm it without detonating it), panicked and fled into a corridor rigged with laser traps which sliced them to pieces.[1]
